A donation to rehabilitation research is an investment in the future

Toronto Rehab is home to what is expected to be the most advanced and sophisticated rehabilitation research environment of its kind in the world. Learn more about iDAPT.

Since the founding of Toronto Rehab in 1998, its research budget has increased tenfold. Toronto Rehab now has 69 research staff and the largest rehabilitation research budget in Canada, making it a powerful force for generating new therapies and assistive technologies.

Research is led by Dr. Geoff FernieAs a valuable research partner, you can play a role in the future of rehabilitation research in Canada - and perhaps the world. Supporting Toronto Rehab’s research program will ultimately lead to a better quality of life for those affected by disabling injury or illness and the effects of age.

Learn about funding research chairs.

Led by Dr. Geoff Fernie, Vice President of Research, much of the research at Toronto Rehab is internationally acclaimed.  More importantly, it is practical, results oriented and designed to be immediately applicable to patient care and quality of life improvements.

Researchers at Toronto Rehab:

  • are developing a powered anti-collision wheelchair that automatically stops if it senses an obstacle and verbally prompts the wheelchair user to go in a safer direction.
  • were the first to discover that treating sleep apnea in people with congestive heart failure improves heart function and helps reduce risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • are making groundbreaking progress in using Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in new ways to help muscles regain functional capacity following stroke or injury.
  • are developing a comprehensive series of Smart Home Technologies that use artificial intelligence to prompt everyday activities, allowing those with Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia to live longer and more safely in their own homes.

Research that mattersThe list of discoveries is long and diverse.  What remains consistent is the overarching desire to make a positive difference in the lives of those who live with a disabling illness or injury - helping them to recover as fully as possible and return to lives that are as fulfilling as possible.

Please give to a lifetime of research - for a lifetime of hope.
